Counselor-in-Training Volunteer Program

You’re mature, like to lead and love kids – make the most of your summer by helping children make the most of theirs. Our Counselor in Training (CIT) volunteer program is specifically designed for teens entering grade 9 and 10 who want to develop their leadership skills in working with children. You will learn behavior management, team-building, communication and activity leadership skills, then apply what you’ve learned as you shadow our staff counselors and participate in leading activities for our younger campers.

This 4-week volunteer program is led by our Director of Staff Training, Nick DeRosa, who returns for his 3rd Big Blue Summer in 2020. Each week, CITs will spend a portion of their day in themed training, and a portion of their day shadowing a group of campers led by 2 counselors. CITs will spend time reflecting on what they learn in both settings. CITs are challenged to step up as leaders by MC-ing, preparing, or even designing our special Friday events.

CITs will graduate from the program with a completed training portfolio, a letter of reference, and skills and memories that will last a lifetime. Successful graduates of the volunteer CIT program may also apply as “returning employees” in 2021. Pingry will accept a small group of applicants for each cohort, so if you’re seriously interested in taking part, please complete your application thoughtfully and accurately.

Volunteer Eligibility: entering grade 9 or 10

Volunteer Commitment: 4 consecutive weeks

Summer 2020

Dear BBS Families –

It’s been a long spring and we hope you are all meeting these challenging times with hope and positivity. Although we’re sad that we won’t be able to see you on either of our campuses in June, it’s never been more important — and our team has never been more inspired — to keep the spirit of summer alive!

We’re very excited to announce that many of Big Blue Summer’s academic courses will be run remotely by our experienced and enthusiastic Pingry faculty and adjunct teachers.

Additionally, in lieu of an in-person BBS Day Camp, we’ve worked really hard to develop an innovative BBS Camp-in-a-Box experience, delivered right to your doorstep! Each weekly BBS Camp-in-a-Box carries a unique theme, comes packed with fun and educational activities, and is highly interactive, including daily online meet-ups with counselors and peers, group games, special guest events, and more!

We’re also extremely proud to partner with organizations who have proactively put together a variety of online content and at-home kits to keep kids engaged and smiling.

Despite the unfamiliarity and uncertainty that 2020 has presented, our mission for summer hasn’t changed one bit: Big Blue Summer is 100% dedicated to delivering the most fun, memorable, and convenient experience for all of our families.

We hope you join us on this unprecedented journey and we look forward to a safe and amazing summer 2020!
