Thinkertown!: Learning Through Play

In-person Summer Experience for Rising Kindergarten – 5th Graders

Thinkertown! is a collaborative in-person experience where campers build a small town and engage in real-world concepts through experiential learning and “hidden academics” to develop 21st century skills!

A typical day at Thinkertown! starts with a centering Morning Meeting, focusing on social and emotional learning as well as relationship building. Campers then collaborate with same-grade friends on a weekly-themed Thinkertown! Challenge, navigating through rich dramatic play and problem-solving experiences. What happens when the bridge into Thinkertown! collapses? How can we rebuild and help weather-proof for future storms? What kind of unique transportation system will we need to develop for Thinkertown!? What kind of plants and animals thrive in this environment? What stores exist on Main Street? Laughter is as much part of Thinkertown! as “hidden academics.” Before the close of the morning, Thinkertown! campers meet in mixed-grade teams for a daily Thinkertown! Community Activity, focused on wellness and civic engagement.

Embedded within these Thinkertown! experiences are intentional moments to build on core skills such as:

  • Problem Solving and Critical Thinking
  • Creativity and Innovation
  • Empathy and Emotional Intelligence
  • Resilience, Self-Confidence and Self-Awareness
  • Leadership, Organizational and Executive Functioning Skills
  • Responsible and Global Citizenship
  • Character Education
  • Communication
  • Digital Fluency and Citizenship
  • Entrepreneurship
  • Sustainability

After refueling with lunch and recess, full-day campers embark on an Afternoon Adventure for an exciting surprise each day! In the afternoon, campers will participate in various outdoor nature based activities. Nature offers infinite ways to develop a child’s cognitive, physical and emotional development. There is even a direct link between a child’s physical and mental state and how much time they spend connecting with nature. Yet, the time that children spend in nature has decreased significantly over time. Through the afternoon program at Thinkertown!, we want our children to do exactly that. Through thoughtfully created hikes, team sports, field trips and play time, we will help our campers experience learning and joy in nature. Wouldn’t it be nice if Thinkertown! helped your child:

  • Learn to experience the power of silence through a walk in the forest trying to recognize various bird sounds
Observe and co-exist with different birds, plants and animals through field trips
  • Be bold and carefree, learning to play, dig, climb, hang and pinch in a wide array of environments
  • Learn to connect, with themselves, others and the environment around them

With half-day and full-day options, Thinkertown! is flexible to meet you and your child’s schedule and needs.
