Course Description

Literary analysis is a vital stage in the development of students’ critical thinking skills. From learning to annotate literature to writing complete literary analysis essays, this course presents an introduction to analyzing literature. Topics such as theme, irony, characterization, plot and conflict, symbolism, imagery, and more are discussed and explored using a variety of middle school level literature.

Students will participate in a series of mini-lessons, each with the goal of refining their ability to read deeply and carefully, think critically, and write clearly and effectively. The course will focus on close reading and analysis of literature, as well as the study of how various literary elements and techniques function within a text. Formal thesis essay writing will be taught in a step-by-step process, along with grammar and vocabulary, culminating in a well-crafted expository argument.
