Big Blue Summer Leaders in Training Day Camp

Our Leaders-In-Training program is tailored to allow middle-schoolers to become more familiar with leadership roles at camp and to develop the skills necessary to become our future CITs and Counselors, all while having tons of summer fun!

LITs are supervised by counselors at all times, with all LIT programming being led by a specialist or a member of the camp leadership team. In comparison to younger campers’ programs, LITs have fewer activity rotations on their schedule. This allows enough time in each activity for increasingly independent LITs to chart their own course and take ownership of their exploration. Projects are presented as open-ended assignments that encourage LITs to practice problem-solving and collaboration skills everywhere from the STEAM Art Studio to the swimming pool.

While we may task LITs with creating fun for other campers, they are never responsible for those campers’ safety and well-being as a staff member would be. LIT projects this summer will include collaboration on the week-in-review video, reading to Kinders, and a weekly “LIT Picnic” with the Minis to help them acclimate to the Outdoor Adventures area. Each summer, we are inspired by the LIT group’s own project suggestions based on their interests, prior experiences, and our camp culture. Leadership training may also include team-building activities, communication skills, first aid and safety training, game theory, and mentorship opportunities.

LITs do not have swim lessons built into their schedule, however they do get in the water on Mondays for an optional free swim, and on Wednesdays to help encourage budding Kinder swimmers in the water. LITs who desire daily instruction may skip Community Time to receive a lesson on arrival each morning. Please let us know if your child is interested in swim lessons so that we can staff the pool accordingly.
